Fehmarnbelt Tunnel: The world's longest immersed tunnel
Location: Røbyhavn (DK) – Puttgarden (DE)
Date: 2020 – ongoing
The Fehmarnbelt Tunnel is an unprecedented engineering feat that will connect Denmark and Germany beneath the Baltic Sea. Spanning 18 kilometers in length, it will be the world's longest immersed tunnel, featuring a four-lane highway and two electrified railway tracks. This project will drastically reduce travel times and strengthen the connection between Scandinavia and Central Europe, boosting trade and sustainable mobility.
The challenge
Building an infrastructure of this magnitude under the sea presents extraordinary technical and logistical challenges. Each of the 79 prefabricated tunnel elements measures over 200 meters and weighs around 73,000 tons. Precision in concreting and compaction is critical to ensure the structure's strength and durability for over a century. Additionally, the project had to meet strict environmental and safety standards, working in extreme conditions and tight deadlines.
